Henry Deering was born in Portland in 1842. After finishing school he worked as a paymaster's clerk to the navy, then left to study law. He practiced law his whole life, but his main occupation was the administration of the Deering estate in Portland. Deering was active in local organizations, including the Portland Public Library and the Maine Historical Society. He died in 1917.
