In 1866, George J. Adams led a group of Americans to start a religious community in Palestine known as the Jaffa Colony.

They hoped to witness the second coming of the Messiah. Most of the followers were from Jonesport.

Benjamin Rogers was one of the elders of this group, and one of the few to survive the two years in Palestine before the community was disbanded in 1868.
