Writing to Elizabeth Dodge Huntington in Maine, Laure Dupré of Paris fashion house Christiane noted in 1930 the strain the Great Depression was having on the fashion industry. In a plea for business, Dupré wrote, "I thank you for the order but am sorry you did not order more. Give me your prices if they are too dreadful."

This black dress, from the 1931-32 season and probably from Christiane, includes rhinestones, ribbons and quintessential 1930s flared hemline. It sold for 3400 francs, about $2,500 US dollars in 2022.

The fashion industry was heavily impacted by the Great Depression, with many designers closing shop. However, the market continued, and luxury goods were still in demand for those fortunate enough to withstand the immense economic downturn.
