Alexander W. Longfellow Jr. drew these plans, "scheme 2," for the new Maine Historical Society headquarters on Congress Street in Portland, adjacent to the Wadsworth-Longfellow House.

Anne Longfellow Pierce gave the Wadsworth-Longfellow House in Portland to the Maine Historical Society. Her gift specified the building of a library to house the collections of the Maine Historical Society. The Research Library is located directly beside the Wadsworth-Longfellow House on Congress Street in Portland.

Alexander W. Longfellow Jr. was the nephew of Anne Longfellow Pierce and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the poet.
