Florentino Lopez of New York served with the segregated Second Battalion of the 366th Infantry. They were stationed at Dunn's Corner in North Yarmouth. The soldiers guarded the Royal River Grand Trunk Railroad Bridge, which provided an important connection between Maine and Canada.

Lopez posed with the Atkins children--Elsie, Beverly, and Claudia (left to right)--who lived on the farm adjacent to the the railroad where the soldiers lived in boxcars. The Atkins befriended the troops as did others in the community of North Yarmouth.
