When Maine became a state in 1820, the Northern border with Canada continued to be disputed. Even in 1835, as shown on this map, the proposed border extended beyond the frame of the map. Also of note are the ten counties represented, rather than 16 counties.

It was not until the end of the Aroostook War in 1842 that Maine’s borders were formalized with the Webster-Ashburton Treaty.
