This silk ensemble has three pieces. The full skirt could be worn with a day or evening bodice. The day bodice (shown) has a high neckline and long bell sleeves. The evening bodice reveals more shoulder, with tiered cap sleeves, embellished with delicate lace. The imported warp print fabric imparts a distinctive blurred look to all three pieces.

The dress was likely worn with a cage crinoline (hoop skirt) made of flexible steel. This new fashion technology replaced the heavy horsehair petticoats formally used to shape wide skirts, allowing women to walk unencumbered with their legs free under the cage.
