Using salves to cure cancer was a popular method in the 18th and 19th centuries, with traces of the practice dating back to thousands of years. Remedies like this one were commonly known as "black salves," due to their corrosive properties to infected (and healthy) skin. It was believed that the salve would draw out the cancer, through the removal of the "eschar," or thick scab, where the paste was applied.
