Firefighters and others combatted a blaze that probably started after an explosion at a Bath service garage. Several similar photos showed upturned cars as well as blown-out windows in nearby homes.

Gannett Publishing Company newspapers, such as the Portland Press Herald and Portland Evening Express focused heavily on local Maine news. The papers also prominently featured photography, which became a defining characteristic of the company.

Fires, especially in the winter, were common occurrences in the 1920's and often covered in the news.
