Construction of the S.S. "Cumberland" at Cumberland Shipyard in South Portland took place on February 28, 1918. Fort Gorges can be seen in the background, on the right.

The ships built by the Cumberland Shipyard were mostly wooden steamers designed by Theodore Ferris, referred to as "Ferris Type Wooden Steamers."
