During World War I, the Young Christian Women's Association (YWCA) advocated for gender equality in the civilian workforce in respect to fair wages and access to work. While many employers embraced women in the workforce during the war, many preferred single women without children. The YWCA established programs to support women from various positions in life, by providing training, housing and advocacy.

This poster demonstrates the significance of the female workforce during the war effort. The slogan "For Every Fighter A Woman Worker" was used in a variety of posters and campaigns during 1918.

It is also advertising for the United War Work Campaign (UWWC), a fund raising effort which combined the forces of the YWCA, YMCA, American Library Association, Knights of Columbus, Jewish Welfare Board, Catholic Welfare Council and the Salvation Army. The UWWC raised money to support both the war effort, and the troops and their families after the Armistice in 1918.

The YWCA is the oldest and largest women's organization in the United States. In addition to advocating for women workers, YWCA also coordinated and provided relief services during the war in conjunction with the Red Cross and Salvation Army.
