The Portland Company drawing depicts the boiler for Admiral Peary's ship, SS Roosevelt. The Portland Company was created in 1846 for the purpose of building locomotives to travel the railroads across the state of Maine, but also for building sustainable marine vessels.

On the Roosevelt, Peary carried out two expeditions to the Arctic Circle, in search of the North Pole.

The drawing is of a 12' x 12' boiler, called a Scotch Boiler, which is a steam boiler specifically made for ships.
