Image Info

Monhegan Island fishermen overhauled and mended seine nets from one dory to another in front of Fish Beach and the Henry Trefethren fish house. The tall man on the left is William Bainbridge Davis, to his immediate right is Frank Brackett. The man on the far right is William Bainbridge Davis's son, Walter Davis. After each use, a seine net was “made-in” or overhauled before it could be reset.

The white building in the distance is called "The Trailing Yew" and was the home of Monhegan's first mailboat captain, William Humphrey and his wife Violetta Trefethren Humphrey. Josephine Davis purchased this home from the Humphrey heirs and began renting rooms in 1926. The Trailing Yew remains an inn as of 2015.
