Hiram F. Abbott was a medical doctor in Rumford Point. At age 26, Abbot left his position as a teacher in local schools and mustered into the Civil War's 2nd Maine Regimental Band on August 30, 1861. He was mustered out on August 15, 1862, following the July 17, 1862 Congressional abolishment of regimental bands in volunteer armies.

After his Civil War service, Abbott returned to Maine and enrolled in Bowdoin College’s Maine School of Medicine, graduating in the Class of 1864. He moved back to Rumford Point, marrying Mary J. Mansur on February 10, 1864, and following her death, he married Mary J. Gammon on May 2, 1915.

Known to residents of the Rumford region as "Dr. Hiram", Abbot's medical career was a long one. Hiram Abbott died on October 15, 1921, at age 86, and is buried in the East Ellis-Goddard Cemetery.
